I am certain that most of you reading this have seen at least one video showing the explosive properties of Mentos mixed with Diet Coke. This is neat to watch happen in normal speed, but as Dave Chappelle so kindly pointed out for us, “Everything is better in slow motion!”. That includes Diet Coke and Mentos. Enjoy!

    Materials
    A 2-Liter of Diet Coke.
A pack of Mentos. Mint works the best in my experience.

    Procedure
Drop 5 or so Mentos into an open bottle of Diet Coke. Back up quickly. Or open your umbrella.

    Result
A very short lived (3s) fountain erupts. Why this happens is fairly interesting. The best explanation I have read for it is here. Neat eh? I love the look of the foamed Diet Coke. In most water eruptions (fountains, sprinkler, etc) the spray is fine and the tension so low that it tends to form rather small droplets. In this however the surface tension is such that it creates a nice smooth somewhat large globule. Just as a word of warning, the taste of the Diet Coke afterwards is quiet foul and flat.
