*DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME*

In this video we take a look at black spray paint from a compressed can being ignited. Please remember that this is extremely dangerous, so please don’t try this at home. Eric, our resident firebug, had been playing with the spray paint can and his lighter as we were prepping for the next shot. The flames were pretty and we thought it would be awesome at high-speed. Personally I think this may be my favorite high-speed shot. The amount of detail that we miss is clearly visible at 2000fps, in real time its just a poof of brightness. This is like a ballroom dance for flames. We lost some of the detail in the flame because the f/stop was too low, allowing too much light in and thus dropping out some of the wonderful detail. Next time I shoot this I will try and get one with more detail. The big sister to the camera we were using apparently has the ability to auto adjust the shutter speed to compensate. That feature would have been incredibly useful. Make sure you talk to the sales rep and ask for this feature if you are looking at a camera for filming these kind of events. This was a one second burst from the spray can, the lighter was held 3″ in front of the stream. This clip has been cropped to show only the flame. The full resolution clip has a lot of dead space in it as the camera was placed about 10′ away.

Thanks to Matt, Mark, Eric and Brandon for helping out with these shots.
