Here is another shot of King, this time we get to see him drying himself off.

    Materials
    A hyper-active boxer-lab puppy.

    Procedure
    Observe.

    Results
A very wet and happy dog…as well as a neat clip.

    Observations
This is just fascinating. I had initially thought that this would not be the most interesting shot seeing as king has short hair and all that, I’m glad I was wrong. His jowls in particular surprised me. I expected some movement but I didn’t expect them to flap up into his eyes. It is just amazing to see how much motion there is in all of this. The water itself is interesting but it is quite overpowered by the movement of his skin.

Sorry for the delayed post, this was a very busy day. This is my father in law’s dog, he’s about as bright as a box of rocks, but is a very sweet dog. Luckily for us he will also chase anything, anywhere. On a more serious note, this is one of the many excellent uses of slow motion cameras, bio-mechanics. Anytime you really want to study the way bodies or body parts work, slow motion is hands down the best way to do it. A camera like the GigaView works wonderfully for this purpose.

    Materials
    A hyper-active boxer-lab puppy.

    Procedure
    Toss a pine cone.

    Results
A very wet and happy dog…as well as a neat clip.

    Observations
Watching King in motion is just awesome, especially the muscles bunching up as he springs forward. It is neat to see how much area he clears in so little time. We’ll have more shots of king in the future.

Billowing Smoke

iPod iPod version

Today we have a nice thick billowing smoke on black.

    Materials
    Hot coals
    A coal chimney
    Dry and fresh cut grass.

    Procedure
Get the coals nice and hot and lay the dried and fresh cut grass on the top.

    Results
    A thick, horrible smelling smoke.

    Observations
This smoke is chocked full of interesting shapes and motions. The eddies kicked up by the wind swirling around the background are interesting. The contrast between the dissipated and the fresh, sharp smoke is also note worthy. Again the elegance of smoke is anything but understated with this clip. As with all smoke and clouds there are numerous faces and shapes that pop up in it.

I sat outside today for a few hours (ok, it was more than a few, but whose counting five hours spent in the hot sun staring at a flower) hoping to capture a Bee or Butterfly on a flower, unfortunately I wasn’t lucky enough to catch one today. However I did capture a really pretty flower flapping in the breeze, so we’ll look at that and hopefully I’ll catch one on Sunday. Tomorrow I’ll be filming some people on Jet Skis so the post will be later in the day again.

    Materials
A hydrangea tree with a few blooms.

    Procedure
You don’t have to do a thing aside from set in the breeze.

    Observations
I don’t really have many observations on this particular shot, what more is there to say than; this flower is awfully pretty.

Jug drop.

iPod iPod version

We’ve all dropped a gallon jug of something and had it make a horrible mess, today we look at that.

    Materials
    1 Gallon Jug of water.

    Procedure
Balance three bags of groceries in one hand and hold the jug in the other while trying to keep the cats from escaping whilst opening the door. In the midst of this madness lose your grip on the jug.

    Results
One more mess to clean up.

    Observations
The jug splitting is interesting but the most fascinating part is the bubbles on the inside as it spills its contents. The distortion of the jug is also neat to watch. I will try and get this one from the side later on.

Full clip update…

I’ll be posting a new clip a bit later on today but I wanted to drop a quick note about the full clips.

I’ve finally found a place that will allow me to run everything as I would like to as well as lower the costs for you. However, to utilize this new service I require the services of someone who is familiar with higher end web coding work. If anyone is familiar with working with the Amazon S3 system who is interested in helping out please e-mail me. Neil@LucidMovement.com Hopefully once I get this all straightened out we will be able to catch up on this backlog of clips.

Today we look at a rather simple, single motor, quadrupedal robot out for a stroll.

    Materials
    A quadruped purple robot.

    Procedure
Turn it on and allow it to walk forward. This particular robot is triggered by exceeding a certain audio threshold.

    Results
    Jiggly, shaky fun.

    Observations
This is a really neat look at how much give there is in this particular robot. The flexible plastic legs are not stiff enough to keep it going in a straight line. The give is enough to turn the robot upwards of 10 degrees to either the left or the right as it moves forward. This was a robot my daughter and I assembled to start us on our foray into robotics. I’ll post some more of our robots over time.
