Here is a close up shot of the high-speed video from yesterday. In addition to moving closer to the subject I have also slowed it down in post to the equivalent of 4000fps.

    Result
Now that we are closer in and slowed down some the sparks as the bullet impacts the can are doubly visible. It is also interesting to note how quickly the can leaves the frame, even at these speeds. This is a perfect video to step through frame by frame, the action moves so quickly that there is often dramatic changes from frame to frame.

Tomorrow I will accidentally edit this post while posting the close up re-writing history in an unrecoverable manner. Though tomorrow I will also try and fix this post as best I can from memory. Sorry folks.

    Materials
    Colgate Aloe Shaving Cream
    Background
    Ruger 223

    Procedure
    Setup your shot, fire.

    Result
This is considerably different from the previous explosions we witnessed. The difference stems from one factor. The can here is pressurized at 53-65PSI @ 70F. When one introduces new holes into something that is pressurized very interesting things have a tendency to happen, one of which is usually a fairly violent explosion. The mess this made was considerable. It snowed shaving cream bits for the better part of 5-10 minutes.

This clip is almost ready made for a flipbooking card in a game. This is a muzzle flash from a snub nose 38 revolver. This was one of several attempts at catching a muzzle flash at a decent resolution. The way these high-speed camera’s work is the higher you crank up the speed, the lower the resolution gets. In some cases a camera will keep your horizontal resolution and only drop the vertical resolution and in some cases they drop both. I would have liked to go with something more along the lines of 10,000fps for this shot but that would have dropped the resolution down to unacceptable levels for my purposes. All of that to say that in order to really catch what is going on I recommend using the frame stepping feature in QT. For those who are unfamiliar with it, just click the time indicator ball and then use your arrow keys to step forward and back.

As promised here is the second shot Brandon took, this time almost dead center. The resulting dust explosion is spectacular. The rapid change in the cloud shape from sharp angles to softer curves is neat to observe. This is a video that definitely benefits from the frame stepping capabilities of QuickTime. If you are unfamiliar with how this works, click on the time indicator ball and then use the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard to step a frame forward or a frame backward. You can hold it down to play back at a faster rate.

Once again we are on the range shooting stuff. In this instance the Ruger 223 is at it again, this time its hapless victim is a bag of Pillsbury flour. This clip is the first of two, since Brandon only clipped the bag. I thought it was interesting to watch how the bullet manages to push the bag so far into itself before ripping through. The swirls in the flour puff are interesting to watch, as is how it drifts in the wind. The bits of paper that come from the bullet exiting are also interesting. Specifically the speed at which they initially leave and how quickly that velocity falls off. Tomorrow I will post the version of this clip where the bag was hit more in the center.

On this shot I was hoping the BB would exit the can, but I figured it probably wouldn’t. It was a rather wimpy BB gun. I was rather surprised by what I got though. I had shaken up the can prior to shooting it to make sure there was plenty of pressure in the can. The spray on this is interesting, the one little trail that waves back and forth is particularly fun. The splash on the background also has some really interesting aspects to it, though I think my favorite part is the vibration on the lower camera right portion of the can. The vibration didn’t really come across in the web res version, I’ll post a closer crop of it in the near future. I accidentally cut the shot off a bit too soon sadly. I really wish I could have caught the bit at the end when the can flopped over and the spray becomes more of a mist.

Ok, I decided not to wait until next week. This is a close up of the spray (just cropped, not resized) as it comes out of the bottle as the bottle is spinning. I’ll let the video do the talking.
